Declan David

Based on Carl Jung's theory of individuation, this installation depicts a Black man's journey to find himself. As viewers walk through the installation, they are bombarded with vivid emotional depictions of this journey.

The installation consists of a series of seven double-sided painted glass works. These pieces illustrate the psyche of the modern North American Black man. Given the complexity of this subject, each piece is double-sided to cover both the external factors that shape this part of the psyche and, on the reverse, the internal emotions.

The sides representing reactions to external factors are painted with vibrant backgrounds that represent the fog of confusion experienced on this journey, shaped by the colors of the painting on the other side. The reverse side is painted with black over the abstract paintings to create an image representing the suppression of emotions in order to survive in this modern world.

This work offers viewers a glimpse into the psyche of a Black man. For viewers who are Black men, this work holds hidden, deeper meanings as they embark on this journey. It is an experience you truly cannot miss.
